When it comes to designing engagement rings, Neil Lane is always thinking about the future.

The celebrity jeweler, who has designed rings for some of the biggest stars in Hollywood including Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Hudson, tells PEOPLE that extravagant rings will be the next big trend in engagement sparklers.

"Boring is going out of style," Lane says. "Sophistication is back in, I think glamor is definitely on fire, vintage aesthetics with a modern twist, and a very contemporary feel is really happening."

Lane, who recently launched a new collection with KAY, says he's been able to take his designs further than ever with his latest project. Some of his favorite rings in the collection include the 3/4 ct tw Diamonds 14K Rose Gold and Oval-Shaped Diamond Engagement Ring 2-1/8 ct tw 14K White Gold.

"When we started all these years ago, there was very little variety in American bridal. It was a round, maybe princess and maybe one other. There were no choices," he says. "There were no fancy shapes. We were able to introduce that to the American market."

Adds Lane: "Now with new lab grown diamonds, we can get bigger centers. The collection is just another level and more variety."

Throughout his years in the industry, Lane has also been the go-to jewelry designer for the The Bachelor franchise.

"It's been an incredible, incredible, incredible journey with Hollywood. Not just famous people, but wonderful people, creative people, and working with America," he says.

"When I go on the Bachelor show, I work with people that have never looked at a ring before. It's overwhelming, but it's also helped me understand how to impart information properly," Lane adds.

With the new year quickly approaching, Lane shares more engagement ring trends for 2024, and his advice for buying the perfect piece of jewelry.

Go Lab Grown

"Lab grown diamonds are definitely starting to trend," Lane says. "That's why we're doing it in this collection. With new lab grown diamonds, we can get bigger centers which means more choices for our customers."

Bring on the Color

"We have morganite and a very beautiful mauve color," he explains of his new KAY collection, which features a wide range of stones in different colors. "And rose gold and yellow gold are big."

When looking for rings, Lane explains how important it is to always be open minded – especially when it comes to color.

"Everyone's posting rings online and social media, but be open minded because when you see something from online in person you may realize you want a different color," he adds. "I think social media is great because it opens up a world of information, but then you just have to go try something on to see if it feels right. There's all these different preconceptions that we have, and sometimes they just go out the door or out the window."

Shop Together

"I've noticed in the last number of years that a lot of couples shop together now," he says. "It used to be before that one person would go get a ring and not really know their beloved's style. But then it wasn't the right thing."

He adds: "Today I think such more than 50% shop together. They give each other hints of what they like and you can see what they like. People will let you know what they like, and if they don't really know and you go into a shop let the consultant or person behind the counter help you."

Another piece of advice from Lane: "Ask questions. What do you think? How does this rose go look at my hand?" he adds. "One of the most important things is to be really to be careful when you're getting a ring. Make sure that you're getting the right ring for the right person for their style."

It Isn't All About the Ring

"Today, even though we have a fast society and social media, people are really trying to go back to what the romance of what a ring means," he continues. "The meaning behind the ring is more important today. People want a ring that takes them to the future, to their new journey, a ring will travel with them throughout their lifetime. That's really my objective in all the collections I do.

At the end of the day, you've got to leave with the ring that you love," he adds.
