It's insult to injury for the Winnipeg Jets after a two-game disappointment versus the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Jets head coach Paul Maurice revealed Monday that star forward Nikolaj Ehlers will miss the remainder of the regular season after suffering an injury in a collision with hard-nosed Leafs defender Jake Muzzin.

Maurice remains "confident and hopeful" that Ehlers will return for the postseason, which is certainly the silver lining for the second-place Jets.

It's unfortunate news for the Jets to be sure, as Ehlers has emerged as a dominant player in his sixth season in Winnipeg. Ehlers ranks second on the team in both goals and points with 21 and 46, respectively, and leads Maurice's talented forward group with a career-best 3.48 points per hour.

That scoring rate is a half-point better than his previous high-efficiency mark.

Ehlers was visibly hurt by the hit from Muzzin, and did take a moment to gather himself in the tunnel, but did manage to finish the game. In fact, he played a focal role in the final moments of the game, engaging in a strange beef with veteran Leafs forward Joe Thornton, which included this swift moment of aggression.

Thornton suggested that NHL Player Safety would have a look at the slash, openly campaigning for some discipline in his post-game remarks.

Unfortunately, Ehlers will miss time for a more serious issue.
