The Jesus and Mary Chain’s William Reid joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the band’s new LP, Glasgow Eyes. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Glasgow Eyes arrives as the band hits their 40th anniversary, though that wasn’t always the plan. As Reid recalls, the record was set back after the engineer lost all of the original recordings, leading to The Jesus and Mary Chain having to start from scratch.

“I won’t forgive the engineers,” Reid says with a laugh. “In this day and age, to not back up digital recordings is just in-fuckin’-sane. I thought it was impossible to lose something these days, because you have so many hard drives that you can put stuff on. In the old days, maybe 25 years ago, in Pro Tools, maybe that could happen. But in 2020 or whatever, I just feel like it’s almost like sabotage or extreme stupidity.”

As Reid reflects on Glasgow Eyes, the conversation turns to their influences, which include everything from progressive rock to Eagles. For the new songs, however, none of their influences come through more explicitly than Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground — the record even closes with a tribute to the iconic New York band.
