Jessica Simpson is beaming with pride when it comes to her daughter Maxwell "Maxi" Drew Johnson’s creative future.

Before accepting the Icon Award at the 37th Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards on Wednesday evening at Cipriani South Street in New York City, Simpson, 43, told Extra that Maxwell’s shoe size has long-since passed hers. However, Maxwell has a creative solution to the hand-me-down dilemma.

“My oldest daughter is 11 and she's a size 10 … so she surpassed me a long time ago … I have all these shoes saved for her but, yeah, she'll probably use them as a purse, knowing her. She'll make them into some amazing piece or she'll do some artwork with them,” she explained.

Simpson said she still has a good idea of how more of her extra items can be put to good use.

“I do have Birdie and she might have more of a petite situation going on. If not, I'm shoving her foot in them by the time she's like six, just in case, ‘cause I did not with Maxwell.”

The mother of three — who shares 11-year-old Maxi, Ace Knute Johnson, 10, and Birdie Mae Johnson, 4, with husband Eric Johnson — was asked what her children thought of her latest honor.

“They're like, ‘What's that? Do you get a glass slipper?’" Simpson told Extra. "I was like, ‘Maybe I'll get a glass slipper.’ ”

Simpson also spoke with PEOPLE on Wednesday, sharing how she manages to divide her time between living in Los Angeles and working in Nashville as she records new music for the first time in 13 years.

“I’m back and forth a lot so now they know what it’s like to miss me and I feel very loved," she said of her children.

“They helped me find a house [in Nashville], we all moved there, they picked their rooms, that type of stuff, but they’re in school so I have two weeks [in Nashville], two weeks home,” she continued.

Last month, the “Take My Breath Away” hitmaker spoke to PEOPLE about the latest fall drop in her Jessica Simpson Collection.

During the conversation, she admitted she considers her family to be “homebodies” and chatted about the upcoming Christmas holiday.

"My family is all about the seasons — Maxwell is already in Christmas mode!" Simpson said. "She has been playing Christmas music on the way to school, already got a little Christmas tree for her room and is spraying pine scent all over our house."
