Jessica Simpson was doing the whole "Coastal Cowgirl" thing way before it became a viral TikTok aesthetic. Some might even say she pioneered it.

"I am a born and raised Texan who chased her dreams into the hills of Hollywood, so I think that qualifies for the term Cali-Cowgal," the fashion mogul, 43, tells PEOPLE in an interview promoting the fall drop from her eponymous Jessica Simpson clothing line.

In fact, the boho style can be seen throughout her latest line, which as always, is inspired by her lifestyle.

"We named the fringe suede shorts this season 'the Callie' and I styled them with a vintage Willie Nelson tee that I got while shooting Dukes of Hazzard many moons ago," she tells PEOPLE. "The combo creates a southern retro festival-ready look."

Simpson returned as the campaign muse for the fall shoot, modeling the clothes on an actual movie set in the California desert.

"It was a unique setting — and also a dusty one," she says. "Shooting there felt cinematic, it was like walking out of the trailer into an old western town. I think the background complemented this new collection perfectly."

The fall drop also debuts a new turquoise jewelry collection which Simpson is seen wearing in a variety of photos that capture her "vintage, classic and All-American" approach to style.

One look that exemplifies that fashion philosophy is the Rosalyn slip dress and Brykia knee-high boot which Simpson models in an old church on set.

"I connected to the vulnerability I find when I am praying," she tells PEOPLE of modeling the outfit. "It felt powerful sitting on the pews or standing in the aisle and just feeling the sunlight shine through the stained glass listening to Nirvana. There is a lot of soul in these particular moments captured on set because it was pure reflection of my truest self."

Some other Simpson style-isms? "Denim on denim on denim on denim is always a powerful choice for an effortless impression" and when in doubt, throw on some good cutoffs.

"Even if my knees start to sag over my kneecaps, I will still be wearin’ Daisy Dukes with pride," she says.

She adds that accessorizing for her is "inspired ideas based on treasured findings at flea markets and vintage shops," revealing, "I’ve become an Etsy expert."

And Simpson isn't the only fashionista in her house. Daughters Maxwell "Maxi" Drew, 11, and Birdie Mae, 4, are already dipping deep into her wardrobe.

"I have to do a weekly girls closet inventory to check for missing items," she says. "They even know my hiding spots somehow. Every time I go to get ready, I’m yelling out across the house, "Where’s my favorite tee shirt, my favorite hoodie, my favorite socks, my hoop earrings?'"

"At this point, I’m considering having one closet for all three of us ladies," she concludes.
