Jessica Chastain to Star in and Produce Vigilante Drama ‘Painkiller Jane’

Jessica Chastain will star in and produce the vigilante drama “Painkiller Jane,” based on the graphic novel series by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada.

In the original story, first published in 1995, the lead character is an undercover police officer assigned to infiltrate a mob who doesn’t realize that an explosive device has been planted on her. She’s severely injured, but her target manages to revive her and give her superhuman regenerative powers. She then becomes the vigilante Painkiller Jane, leaving behind her life as a police officer.

Lotus Entertainment’s Lenny Beckerman will produce along with Solipsist Films’ Stephen L’Heureux and Chastain through her Freckle Films banner. Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel, Ara Keshishian, and Palmiotti will executive produce.

“Painkiller Jane” was adapted into a 2005 Syfy channel TV movie, starring Emmanuelle Vaugier. Syfy also aired a season of another “Painkiller Jane” series in 2007 starring Kristanna Loken.

Chastain will be seen next as a lobbyist in John Madden’s “Miss Sloane,” which EuropaCorp is releasing domestically on Nov. 25.

Lotus Entertainment announced Thursday that it’s tapped “50 First Dates” director Peter Segal to helm the romantic comedy “Holidates.” Lotus recently wrapped production on Keanu Reeves’ “Replicas.” Its upcoming films include Halle Berry’s “Kipnap” and “November Criminals.”

Palmiotti has written the comic series “Deadpool,” “Jonah Hex,” and “Punisher.”

Chastain is repped by CAA, Mosaic, and Hansen, Jacobson. Palmiotti is repped by Lotus Management. The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
