Jessica Chastain Agrees: Her All-White-Actress Mag Cover Is a ‘Sad Look’
Actress Jessica Chastain has come forward to criticize herself. She recently posed for an awards season magazine cover on which all the actresses featured are white — and observers weren’t shy about slamming it for it’s lack of diversity.
Chastain herself said the Los Angeles Times’ cover story for The Envelope section “is a sad look that there’s no WOC [women of color] in this pic of us promoting our female lead films.”
After the two-time Oscar nominee was called out for taking part in the cover shoot, the actress tweeted: “The industry needs to become more inclusive in its storytelling.”

Chastain followed up, tweeting, “Its TERRIBLE that I can’t think of at least 5 female lead films with woc this year.”

The cover story, which featured Chastain, Annette Bening, Margot Robbie, Diane Kruger, Saoirse Ronan, and Kate Winslet, touted Hollywood’s continuing efforts for “a shift in focus.”
Chastain also faced some backlash on Twitter for not speaking up. One Twitter user said, “speak up at the photoshoot sis.”

Another Twitter user added, “Instead of trying to ‘think’ if there had been any WOC leads this year why did you not use your voice to change the rhetoric? Shoddy defection!”
