Jesse Eisenberg has been married to his wife Anna Strout since 2017.

The actor, who has been nominated for an Oscar, two BAFTAs and a Golden Globe for his work in movies including The Social Network, first met Strout in 2001 when she was working on the set of The Emperor’s Club, which he had a role in. They dated until 2012, before getting back together in 2015.

They had a child together in 2017 and got married that same year. Together, they’ve engaged in charity work — Strout’s mother was the executive director of an organization supporting survivors of domestic and sexual abuse — and have attended a wide range of events. They keep their personal lives quite private, but Eisenberg did describe his wife as “amazing” in 2013.

So who is Jesse Eisenberg’s wife? From her upbringing to her work, here’s everything to know about Anna Strout and her relationship with the actor.

She grew up an only child in Indiana

Strout — who is the only child of Toby Susan Strout and Bob Arnove and grew up in Bloomington, Indiana — doesn’t share many details about her early life. Her mom was an activist and executive director at the Middle Way House, a nonprofit organization that supports survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking, per Forbes, while her dad is a writer and academic at Indiana University Bloomington.

She grew up going to marches, rallies, community meetings and press conferences about domestic violence and sexual assault with her mom. She said about her mom in 2020, “She empowered and challenged others through personal conversations, public speaking and simply by being herself.”

She first dated Eisenberg from 2001 to 2012

Strout and Eisenberg met on the set of the 2002 drama The Emperor’s Club, which was filmed in 2001. Strout was working as an assistant to film producer Lisa Bruce, while Eisenberg played the role of Louis Masoudi.

In 2011, Eisenberg told Seventeen that Strout was the only person he’d ever dated up to that point. He said, “I find people who want to help other people to be the most interesting. I come from a family of teachers, and my friends are teachers, oftentimes in very difficult school situations. My job is so selfish and focused on my own vanity that I like to surround myself with people who are actually helping people throughout their day."

After briefly going their separate ways, Eisenberg and Strout got back together in 2015, and were then photographed with each other at a basketball game in January 2016. They have a son, Banner, who was born in early 2017.

In October 2016, E! News first shared the news that the couple was expecting a baby. Per The Washington Post, they were first seen with their son getting pastries at a bakery in Washington, D.C., in March 2017.

The couple rarely discusses their child, but in January 2023, Eisenberg said on Today that he’s “so thankful” when his son acts like his wife, saying, “I married an amazing woman. I'm praying just be like her, just be like her, please just be everything like her. And for the most part, he's heading in that direction, which is the superior choice."

She works in the entertainment industry

Before working on The Emperor’s Club, Strout worked as a set production assistant on the psychological thriller Don’t Say a Word. She was also assistant business manager on Digital_Man/Digital_World in 2011.

She keeps a low profile

Strout generally stays out of the public eye and doesn’t appear to have any public social media profiles. As a couple, she and Eisenberg don’t often discuss their relationship, either — he told The Guardian in 2016 about a trip to Strout's hometown of Bloomington, “I was there for, like, personal reasons. For reasons I don’t want to bring up in an interview.”

She works for nonprofits

Strout volunteers at the Middle Way House, an organization that supports survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and sex trafficking. She also teaches at a nonprofit organization in New York City, and is the director of special projects and events for Urban Arts Partnership.

In 2020, when a shelter-in-place order took effect in Los Angeles for the COVID-19 pandemic, Strout and Eisenberg took their son to Bloomington in an RV for a road trip, where they planned to volunteer and help raise funds for the organization. Eisenberg told The Hollywood Reporter at the time, “It felt like the safest way to do it for us and others ... My wife and I are coordinating donations from local businesses ... And we have been doing some more unusual fundraising efforts, like a community program to buy 400 ferns. The money is going to the shelter, and it supports the greenhouse in town.”

Per the Los Angeles Times, Strout encouraged her husband, who had written music for most of his life but not shared it with anybody, to sign onto the 24 Hour Musicals program in 2017. Participants write, produce, direct, rehearse and perform a short musical to raise money for the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund.

Strout has also accompanied her husband to various events over the years, from the Vanity Fair Cannes Party in 2019 to Film Independent’s Independent Spirit Awards in 2006, when they were first dating.
