'Jersey Shore' 10-year anniversary: Do you know the difference between GTL, DTS and FTD?

Happy anniversary, “Jersey Shore.”

The MTV series that gave us “GTL” (that's “gym, tan, laundry”), “cabs are here” and put Seaside Heights on the map (although some borough residents would argue for all the wrong reasons) premiered 10 years ago on Dec. 3, 2009.

That's when Barack Obama was president and everyone had a MySpace account.

“Jersey Shore” in 2009, created by SallyAnn Salsano's 495 Productions, was centered on a cast of mostly Italian-Americans from New York and New Jersey, and the show transfixed many in the nation with a culture of fist pumping, T-shirt time and smush rooms that probably seemed as exotic to many New Jerseyans as it did to viewers across the country.

“Jersey Shore” drew attention even before it aired. The series was billed as featuring “four of the hottest, tannest, craziest guidos” who “keep their hair high, their muscles juiced and their fists pumping all summer long.”

UNICO National, an Italian-American organization, called the show “trash television” before it debuted, and several major sponsors pulled their ads. The Jersey Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau piled on, stating that “MTV is providing a one-dimensional, dramatized version of a very small group of visitors’ summer experiences in one Jersey Shore town.”

The first few weeks were rocky, especially when cast member Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi was sucker-punched by a patron at the Beachcomber Bar and Grill. The punch was shown by MTV in a teaser then pulled from the actual Dec. 17, 2009, episode.

But it was a hit, and by Season 3, “Jersey Shore” was racking up more than 8 million viewers per episode and setting records for MTV viewership. Catch phrases from the show, including “Ron-Ron Juice” and “grenade,” a unfortunate euphemism for an unattractive woman, were widespread.

“Jersey Shore” was at the apex of Jersey-based reality shows — and there were many, including “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” “Jerseylicious,” “Cake Boss” and “Jersey Couture.”

Instead of Jersey being in the shadow of New York City and Philadelphia, it was the star.

Now, 10 years later, it's "Jersey Shore Family Vacation," which debuted in the spring of 2018. It's also hit, and it's filmed at various locations along the Jersey Shore, as well as Miami and Las Vegas. A new season, featuring the return of Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino from prison, will debut next year, according to MTV.

Cast members have kids and the story lines now are a bit more complex than a night at the Bamboo Bar in Seaside Heights. Still, it does have its meatball appeal.
