Jerry Richardson to Sell Carolina Panthers Amid Sexual, Racial Misconduct Investigation
Jerry Richardson will sell his Carolina Panthers at the end of the season in the wake of an investigation into allegations of his “workplace misconduct,” the NFL confirms.
At least four former Panthers staffers have received monetary settlements due to Richardson’s inappropriate workplace comments, including sexually suggestive language and behavior, and the use of a racial slur toward an African-American scout, Sports Illustrated reports.
In a letter released Sunday, Richardson wrote, “I believe it is time to turn the franchise to new ownership. Therefore, I will put the team up for sale at the conclusion of this NFL season.”
No mention was made of the investigation in Richardson letter.
Multiple complaints have been triggered by female employees for sexual harassment and on one occasion, for directing a racial slur at an African American employee. Sources told SI that on the team’s Jeans Day, Richardson would ask female employees to turn around “so he could admire their backsides” and then say, “Show me how you wiggle to get those jeans up.”
