Jerrod Carmichael is ready to share his story. Later this month, his new unscripted series, Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, will premiere on HBO. Judging by its trailer (below), the experimental docuseries will be just as essential as Carmichael's transcendent comedy special, Rothaniel.

It sounds like quite a feat, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s Carmichael. The 36-year-old has spent his career using comedy to relate to others—and, in turn, better understand himself. In Carmichael's previous comedy specials, Love at the Store, 8, and Rothaniel, he used his personal experiences to explore politics, crime, wealth, and sexuality. Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show is another genre-bending attempt to dive into his own psyche—and if it’s anything like its predecessors, the journey will be just as insightful and hilarious.

According to Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show's synopsis, the comedian will continue his quest for love, sex, and connection. In the trailer, Carmichael says, “I’ve been like, just trying to maintain being truthful on camera.” One man, who doesn’t want to be filmed, questions Carmichael’s ability to do that. “This is not truth,” he says. “This is a narrative that will be edited… that’s not true.”

Despite their doubts, Carmichael proceeds. “Being honest is cool until you have a reason to lie,” he says. Then we see snippets of Carmichael’s personal life—including time with family, which struggles to accept his sexuality. In one scene, he confronts his father, saying, “When I came out, y'all reacted like someone died. It hurt my feelings.” In another scene, his mother prays for him to be straight. Despite the circumstances, Carmichael commits to leaving the cameras on. “Let’s just blow this shit wide open.”

Soon, we’ll be able to see Carmichael’s vision come to life. Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show hits HBO on Friday, March 29, at 11:00 P.M. ET.
