Jerrod Carmichael has been named the host of the 80th Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Thursday.

NBC will broadcast the three-hour live ceremony on Jan. 10, 2023. Nominees will be revealed on Monday, Dec. 12 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where the awards show is scheduled to take place. Produced by Dick Clark Productions and Jesse Collins Entertainment in association with the HFPA, the telecast will air on both NBC and Peacock. Executive producers are Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon.

“We’re so excited to have Jerrod Carmichael host the historic 80th Golden Globe Awards,” said HFPA president Helen Hoehne in a statement. “His comedic talents have entertained and thrilled audiences while providing thought-provoking moments that are so important in the times we live. Jerrod is the special kind of talent this show calls for to kick off the awards season.”

“Jerrod is a phenomenal talent with a fresh perspective and excellent comedic style,” added Jesse Collins, executive producer and CEO of Jesse Collins Entertainment. “We’re all thrilled to have him host this year’s show.”

Carmichael is the co-creator, writer and star of “The Carmichael Show,” which ran on NBC for three seasons from 2015 to 2017. Earlier this year, he won an Emmy for his HBO Max comedy special “Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel,” in which he comes out as gay and dives deep into his family history. He hosted “SNL” for the first time this past April. “On the Count of Three,” Carmichael’s directorial debut starring himself, Tiffany Haddish, J. B. Smoove, Lavell Crawford and Henry Winkler, debuted at Sundance Film Festival in 2021.

The Globes returns to NBC after opting for a private ceremony last year in the wake of multiple controversies involving its membership, operations and a lack of diversity at the HFPA. The network canceled the 2022 Awards after a Los Angeles Times article revealed that none of the HFPA’s 87 members were Black, drawing widespread backlash. In September, the newly for-profit organization doubled in size by adding 103 international participants, who are not HFPA members, to the Globes’ voting body.

After meeting with HFPA leadership in April, several top publicists told TheWrap that an industry-wide boycott was still in place. “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser, who in 2018 revealed that he was sexually assaulted by a member of the HFPA, recently said he would not attend the awards should he receive a nomination.

Variety first reported the news about Carmichael.
