The Hurt Locker actor welcomed Ava with ex Sonni Pacheco in March 2013. He was 42 at the time and has shared how becoming a dad later on in life is “the best thing” he’s ever done.

“The only thing I think about when I’m not with my baby is, 'How do I get to my baby?'” he told Capitol File magazine in 2014. ”I’m very miserable when I don’t see her. I really love being a father.”

The actor's doctor, Dr. Christopher Vincent, added that Ava was “one of [Renner's] strongest motivators” to get up and moving again. "You really reflect on life when something like this happens. It's like, 'Okay, what's important?’” Vincent told PEOPLE exclusively.

On the one-year mark of the accident, Renner shared an Instagram post in which he called Ava "reason number one" for his recovery. The two are seen embracing one another as they ring in 2024 together.

"As I got better, she got better, less afraid,” he wrote in the caption. “There is simply no better motivator to recover than to heal your family and friends."
