While Jeopardy! has ruled our televisions for decades as a syndicated broadcast, it will be expanding its game show to Amazon’s Prime Video as spinoff Pop Culture Jeopardy!

Sony Pictures Television, which produces all iterations of Jeopardy!, announced on Tuesday that the “brand-new twist” on the quiz show’s answer-and-question format will combine the “academic rigor” of the original with the “excitement and unpredictability of pop culture.”

Per the press release, contestants will be grouped in teams of three and will “need to be experts in categories from Alternative Rock to The Avengers; Broadway to MMA; Gen Z to Zendaya” as they compete for the grand prize. Michael Davies is set as the new show’s executive producer (he currently produces the original syndicated show and ABC’s Celebrity Jeopardy! and Jeopardy! Masters).

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with our partners at Amazon to make Prime Video the home for our new Jeopardy! spinoff series,” said Suzanne Prete, President of Game Shows at Sony Pictures Television, in a statement. “With Michael Davies at the helm, Pop Culture Jeopardy! is going to be a nail biter for game show enthusiasts who can expect to see teams competing at the highest level of Jeopardy! combined with a fresh twist of pop culture Olympics for the mind … it’s going to be a must-watch for longtime viewers and new fans alike.”

A host for the upcoming series has yet to be announced. Following the death of longtime host Alex Trebek in 2021, the show has experienced a tumultuous period in its history. After executive producer Mike Richards was installed as the show’s showrunner and host, he was let go shortly into his tenure when reports surfaced of discrimination lawsuits against him while he was executive producer of The Price Is Right.

In the summer of 2022, Jennings and Bialik were announced as Jeopardy! cohosts, sharing hosting duties for the show’s syndicated episodes as well as its primetime specials. However, Bialik announced last fall that she would be stepping down after producers “informed” her she would be leaving the syndicated show.
