Jennifer Lopez skipping World Cup opening ceremony

This week marks the beginning of the 2014 World Cup, perhaps the biggest non-Olympics sporting event in the world. A total of 32 nations will send their best soccer stars to Brazil to compete for the top prize in futbol.

But the star providing its theme song will no longer be attending.

Jennifer Lopez, who recently released the official World Cup anthem “We Are One (Ola Ola),” announced last night that she will not be at the opening ceremonies in Sao Paolo. “For production issues, Jennifer Lopez, one of the artists of the official song ‘We Are One,’ will not be able to perform at the Fifa World Cup opening ceremony,” she said in a statement.

Pitbull will still be appearing at the show alongside Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte.

Lopez’s camp didn’t give any other reason behind the cancellation besides the vague “production issues,” though her recent split from backup-dancer boyfriend Casper Smart may be a reason she’s choosing to forgo the giant international platform the Cup would provide to promote her new album A.K.A., which drops next week.

Or maybe she’s just saving face—as you can hear below, as a stadium-rallying anthem, “We Are One (Ola Ola)” is no “Waka Waka (This Time For Africa).”
