Jennifer Lopez Says Working From Home Is Like a 'Reset Button' & We're Not So Sure

We’re all stuck at home for the foreseeable future, and that includes celebrities. Jennifer Lopez just gave an interview urging those who could stay home to do so and reflecting on her own work from home life in these uncertain days. One not-so-surprising outcome? It turns out that celebrities’ quarantines look just a little different from ours. Lopez described her CDC-recommended social distancing practice as a “reset button” — but I don’t know anyone for whom that’s really true.

Lopez talked with Elle (on the phone) about how her plans have changed with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “For me, working from home is reading scripts, developing new projects, even working out and learning new dance routines,” Lopez explained. “This situation, if we’re lucky enough to be healthy — and if you are, be grateful — but if you’re healthy and home, it’s a real reset button for so many of us.”

“Now, you can use the time to prepare,” she continued. “At some point, hopefully soon, we’re going to bounce back. We always bounce back. And so we need to use this time to get ready to come back even better… Nobody wanted this to happen, but if it has to be this way, you can take advantage of the time and work to get better.”

Obviously, Lopez has an admirable attitude here. But our productivity-obsessed society can also lean too far in this direction, with new directives every day to build a side hustle or finally get around to that deep clean with all our extra time. If a directive to stay inside allows Lopez extra time to catch up on her routines and come back better than ever, that’s great! But for many of us, that’s simply not the case.

For parents especially, for whom school closures mean unprecedented childcare needs alongside adjusting to a new at-home workspace, this time will be challenging and busier than ever. We’re all doing the best we can, and no one should feel guilty for not coming out of this time with a finished novel or a series of freshly knit sweaters.

One point we do agree with Lopez on, though: “I think there’s a lot of online shopping going on right now,” the singer mused. Guilty as charged.
