Jennifer Lopez and in character in 'Atlas'

Jennifer Lopez sees a lot of herself in her Atlas character.

While speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at her new movie's premiere on Monday, May 20 at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, Lopez, 54, said she sees similarities between herself and the character she plays, Atlas Shepherd.

Atlas is “a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence,” per the film's synopsis. After joining a “mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past,” her “only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.”

Admitting she would "always" "infuse a little bit" of herself into the character when playing Atlas, Lopez tells PEOPLE, "We are so different because she's like ... doesn't wear any of her emotions. She's so closed off and I am too much emotion sometimes."

"But at the same time we are both very strong and sure of what they feel," the musician continues. "At times. She was very sure. She was like, 'This is what's happening, please listen to me. Please tell me.' And felt very misunderstood at times. I can also relate to that a bit."

Commenting on knowing what she wants to achieve when it comes to creative characters, Lopez says, "I'm very sure of what I want and sometimes I'm not. Sometimes I'm very doubtful of myself, but I follow my instincts more than anything and I find that when I go against that, is when I go wrong."

Lopez was joined by costars including Simu Liu and Sterling K. Brown at the movie's L.A. premiere, which she attended without her husband Ben Affleck. The singer was pictured wearing her wedding ring on the red carpet amid reports of marriage tension with the actor, 51, who wasn't in attendance as he is now filming The Accountant 2.

Earlier this month, Lopez opened up about why the sci-fi thriller's story resonated with her on such a deep level in a clip shared exclusively with PEOPLE.

“The first time I read the script for Atlas, I felt very passionately about the story and particularly the friendship story at the core of it,” she said. “At the end of it I was literally sobbing.”
