Jennifer Lopez’s second-chance romance with Ben Affleck might be just as public as it was the first time around, despite their protests that it’s different. Now, it’s being revealed that an A-list celebrity, who is friends with the 54-year-old superstar, worried that their love was negatively on display and called her out on it.

Jane Fonda, who remained close to Lopez after they starred in Monster-in-Law together in 2005, had some reservations about appearing in her upcoming 65-minute musical, This Is Me…Now: A Love Story, on Amazon Prime. The movie reflects her romance with Affleck, inspired by love letters that he wrote to woo her back. The 86-year-old actress relayed her hesitations to Lopez’s longtime manager, Benny Medina, first. “I believe that everyone in the entire world is pulling for this relationship and this love. And the idea of how you present that is so sacrosanct, so important. It should be handled in a way that you aren’t overly flaunting it, so much so that it creates any form of criticism or resentment,” Fonda explained in the documentary that accompanies her movie, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, via Variety.

Fonda later spoke with the Hustlers star directly, and their conversation was captured in the documentary. Let’s just say the Oscar winner was quite blunt. “I want you to know that I don’t entirely know why, but I feel invested in you and Ben, and I really want this to work,” Fonda says in the documentary, speaking for much of the universe. “However, this is my concern. Like, it feels too much like you’re trying to prove something instead of just living it. You know, every other photograph is the two of you kissing and the two of you hugging.”

Lopez took it well and had a light-hearted response. “That’s just us living our life,” she laughed.

Fans will love Fonda even more when they realize that she even got caught up in the “Sad Affleck” social media wave after his appearance with Lopez at the Grammys in 2023. “I got real scared, you know, with all that s**t about the Grammys and he looks unhappy and I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, what’s happening?’” asked Fonda. But there was Lopez again, smoothing over the situation, adding, “Nothing! He was like, ‘I’ve become the symbol of the beleaguered man.’”

Affleck agreed with his wife during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! after he attended the Grammys. He promised the talk show host, “Listen, I have a very unhappy-looking resting face. It’s how God made me,” he claimed. “You don’t have to punish me for it.”

Despite the couple’s reassurance, Fonda was just asking the questions that all of the fans wanted to know — and we love her for that.
