The great Bennifer breakup of the early 2000s has trauma bonded Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck together forever. The couple is fully back on track now, having tied the knot in July 2022, but the media scrutiny that surrounded their 2004 breakup (which ended their first engagement) took a toll on them both, Lopez recently revealed. “We both have PTSD,” the singer told Variety.

The tabloid frenzy around their romance is what Affleck and Lopez first cited as the reason why they initially postponed their wedding in 2003 before calling it off entirely in 2004. “Due to the excessive media attention surrounding our wedding, we have decided to postpone the date,” Affleck and Lopez shared in a statement to People in September 2003. “When we found ourselves seriously contemplating hiring three separate ‘decoy brides’ at three different locations, we realized that something was awry.”

By January 2004, Bennifer was no more. 17 years later, in April 2021, Lopez and Affleck rekindled their romance. “We’re older now. We’re wiser,” Lopez told Variety. “We also know what’s important, what’s really important in life, and it’s not so much what other people think. It’s about being true to who you are.”

In February, Lopez will release the album This Is Me… Now with an accompanying film. She explained that there was a sense of hesitancy within her team around including her relationship with Affleck in the narrative of the releases. “As artists, we have to follow our heart,” she said. “And this is me following my heart and doing something that maybe everybody didn’t think was the best idea, but I had to do it.”
