This week, Hollywood headed to the Rivera for the Cannes Festival. While the main focus of the festival is the films that have been created over the past couple of years and the stars who arrive on the red carpet, the festival also functions as a hub for business, with films being sold to distributors and actors finding new roles.
And even as Cannes marches on, there is still plenty happening Stateside. Even amid a strike, Grey’s Anatomy has its eyes toward season 20, and Deadpool 3 has reunited a few familiar faces.

The film—directed by Dito Montiel—reportedly follows a criminal whose day-to-day life is turned on its head when his distant, oddball family comes back into his life. Chloë Sevigny joins Bonjour Tistesse
Here’s a perfect premiere for any Chloë Sevigny closet-sale attendees willing to wait to debut their prized acquisitions: Sevigny is set to star in an English-language adaptation of Bonjour Tristesse, a popular novel by French author Françoise Sagan. The novel follows a young woman, Cécile, and her widowed father, Raymond, as the quiet mood of their summer in the South of France is transformed by the arrival of Cécile’s mother’s old friend Anne (Sevigny). Benedict Cumberbatch links up with Babadook director Jennifer Kent
No stranger to the supernatural, Benedict Cumberbatch’s new role has some echoes of Jennifer Kent’s masterful 2014 debut feature The Babadook. An adaptation of Dylan Southern’s adaptation of Max Porter’s novel Grief Is The Thing With Feathers, the film follows a widowed father (Cumberbatch) who encounters a strange creature known as “Crow,” whose physical form echoes the father’s illustrations, lurking around his home. Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs will star in The Salt Path adaptation
In a win for Scully devotees everywhere, Gillian Anderson has a new post-The Crown leading role coming up, alongside Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris’ Jason Isaacs. The duo is set to star in an adaptation of Raynor Winn’s memoir The Salt Path, which follows a British couple who embark on a 630-mile seaside trek from Somerset to Dorset after two crushing life blows. Marianne Elliott, the Tony and Olivier-winning director known for her stage work, will make her big-screen debut with the film. [Hattie Lindert]
Lucy Liu and Cooper Hoffman will join Christoph Waltz for Old Guy
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucy Liu and Licorice Pizza breakout Cooper Hoffman are set to join Old Guy, an action comedy from Expendables 2 director Simon West. Django Unchained’s Christoph Waltz had already been attached to star. Hoffman and Waltz will play a mismatched, multigenerational duo of assassins who may just learn they have more in common than previously thought. [Drew Gillis]
Brianna Hildebrand and Shioli Kutsuna will return for Deadpool 3
It wouldn’t be Deadpool without Negasonic Teenage Warhead now, would it? Brianna Hildebrand will reprise her role as the teen mutant who can cause atomic bursts in Deadpool 3, reuniting with Ryan Reynolds, who is already confirmed to return. She’s not alone. Shioli Kutsuna, who joined the franchise in Deadpool 2 as Yukio, will also be back. Negasonic and Yukio are the first proper LGBTQ relationship depicted in a Marvel film, so it’s cool to see them find their way back.
Free Guy’s Shawn Levy will direct Deadpool 3. Morena Baccarin, Karan Soni, Rob Delaney, and Leslie Uggams also reprise their roles from previous movies. Hugh Jackman will don Wolverine’s suit again for this film, with Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen joining in undisclosed roles. It’s already shaping up to be a potential blockbuster, huh? Fred Hechinger is eying Gladiator sequel
Another day, another face joins the colossal Gladiator sequel. This time, The White Lotus’s Fred Hechinger is reportedly circling the role of Emperor Geta, according to Deadline. May Calamawy from Moon Knight has also joined the cast, along with Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Peter Mensah and Matt Lucas. However, it’s not all good news, as recent Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan has bowed out of the picture over scheduling conflicts. Keoghan has been booked and busy, but we’re sure Ridley Scott would prefer he was a little less busy. [Drew Gillis]
Grey’s Anatomy will keep most of its staff for another season
The doctors are staying clocked in for Grey’s Anatomy’s next landmark season. James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson, a.k.a. the only remaining original cast members, are confirmed to return for season 20. That means Dr. Richard Webber and Dr. Miranda Bailey still have more stories left to tell. The same can’t be said for series star Ellen Pompeo, who left halfway through season 19. However, Pompeo continues to executive produce and do the voiceovers, and the door is left open for Dr. Meredith Grey to return whenever she wants.
Meanwhile, the other cast members confirmed to return are Camilla Luddington as Jo, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia, Kim Raver as Teddy (a.k.a. the new Chief), and Kevin McKidd as Owen. Sincerely, how much worse can they make the Teddy and Owen relationship? We’ll find out whenever the show returns, but that might be delayed because the studios continue to hold out on paying writers what they’re owed. There’s no word yet but it’s safe to bet season 19's new ensemble—Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, and Midori Francis—will also be back. [Saloni Gajjar]
Maria Bakalova has a new action comedy via Sylvester Stallone
Maria Bakalova seems to be approaching the likes of Sydney Sweeney, Barry Keoghan, and Pedro Pascal in the category of “How is this person making this many projects?” Bakalova will star in My Masterpiece, an action comedy that follows a hitwoman “hellbent on dismantling an unfair system within her industry,” according to an official description provided to Variety. Sylvester Stallone’s production company, Balboa Productions, is attached, and the project was introduced to buyers at Cannes this week. [Drew Gillis]
Ben Kingsley and Sofia Boutella join action comedy The Killer’s Game
Dave Bautista will be joined by Ben Kingsley and Sofia Boutella for the upcoming action comedy The Killer’s Game, reports Deadline. The details are still largely being kept under wraps, but the film will be based on the Jay Bonansinga novel of the same name. The Killer’s Game goes into production this summer. [Drew Gillis]
Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, and Laurence Fishburne cast in Amateur
Joining Rami Malek in Amateur are Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, and Laurence Fishburne, reports Deadline. According to a plot synopsis, the thriller “follows a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them. When it becomes clear they won’t act due to conflicting internal priorities, he blackmails the agency into training him and letting him go after them himself.” Malek is presumably playing the main character—the roles of the other actors haven’t been disclosed yet. Kiefer Sutherland joins Juror No. 2
The cast for Clint Eastwood’s upcoming Juror No. 2 just got a bit fuller, thanks to Kiefer Sutherland. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the 24 star will join Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, and Zoey Deutch in the legal thriller. The film is expected to shoot this summer. [Drew Gillis]
