Jenna Dewan found love again after heartbreak, and she wants you to know you can too. But, make no mistake, Dewan — who is a self-professed believer in keeping it real — doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to how difficult it was to heal from her divorce. In her new wellness book, Gracefully You: Finding Beauty and Balance in the Everyday, the actress opens up about ending her marriage to ex Channing Tatum once it had “moved into hurting,” as well as the part new-age, part old-school ways she processed her pain.

Dewan and Tatum met (and fell in love) on the 2006 set of Step It Up, fans were undeniably enthralled with the couple. That obsession only grew once the pair got married in 2009 and, four years later, welcomed daughter Everly. But as Dewan writes in her new book, their relationship wasn’t always as perfect as its perception.

By the time they decided to split in 2018, Dewan knew the couple simply wasn’t clicking anymore. “I’d come to realize the dynamic I was in wasn’t serving me nor was it serving my daughter. First and foremost, I had to accept the realization this isn’t working and had moved into hurting,” she wrote, also noting, “The public saw Channing and I in this idealized romanticized light. This made things difficult for me because I like being as honest and real as I can.”

And now, Dewan feels as though she has found a partnership where she can be true to herself and what’s best for her family. She and Tony Award-winning actor Steve Kazee are together and expecting her second child. Of finding her happily-ever-after post-heartbreak, Dewan wrote, “It was this cosmically great thing where we circled back around each other after a moment of recognition years ago.”

That’s not to say that getting to a place where she was emotionally, mentally and spiritually ready for that connection was easy. The honest truth about her breakup? It was hard. She needed support. And she leaned like hell on the things that helped bring her through it. “Yes, I carried a rose quartz in my bra and yes, I took herbal supplements to help me heal, but also my mom flew in to be by my side and I called my friends late at night to sob in their ears,” she confessed, sharing one of her favorite healing supplements. “One of the many ways I holistically coped with my heartbreak and stress was with holy basil.”

Eventually, though it was a tough journey, Dewan came out on the other side feeling liberated — and strong enough to move on. “At the end of the day, I just kept telling myself to trust, trust, trust. And trust I did,” she said. “The news of our divorce didn’t drown me. Not to any extent I couldn’t handle, anyway. When I was ready, I started dating someone amazing … Lo and behold, everything started flowing together.”

Gracefully You: Finding Beauty and Balance in the Everyday hits stands Oct 22.
