Jenna Bush Hager got a little help from Joanna Gaines this holiday season!

On Monday’s episode of Today with Hoda and Jenna, the mom of three, 41, revealed that she “broke” her rule about not putting up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving while chatting with her co-host Hoda Kotb. She added that while it was partly because Whole Foods was having a sale, she was also inspired by recent guest Joanna Gaines to spread some holiday cheer early this year.

She shares personal photos of her decorated tree and tastefully adorned mantel complete with greenery swags and citrus. “Jenna, how did you know how to do all that? Joanna Gaines?” Kotb asks.

Bush Hager confirms, “Joanna Gaines inspired me. I hung that wreath. I made those.”

Kotb is also impressed by her co-star's classic holiday DIY, decorating oranges with cloves. "it’s so easy," the former first daughter explains. "It’s a great craft for kids. This is not like me, I know I’m not a DIY mom!” (She shares three children —  Hal, 4, Poppy, 8, and Mila, 10 — with husband Henry Hager.)

In one photo, the fireplace mantle is lit up with twinkly lights and a thick swath of pine boughs. Clementines with cloves and pinecones are pictured adorning a wreath in another shot.

“It smells so good. All you do is you get clementines or oranges," Bush Hager explains. “You poke holes with a little toothpick all around them and then you stick the cloves in. Like, Hal could do it. Hal did those. I had to add a little more but they smell so good.”

Kotb chimes in that the decor could even double as a centerpiece, and Bush Hager agrees that they could be used for place markers as well.

The Everything Beautiful in Its Time author also shared that she decorated her Christmas tree with her kids yesterday while enjoying some hot chocolate and Christmas music.

“I can’t believe you got your tree already,” Kotb says. “Do you water it all the time? Is that how you keep it alive?”

The two then discuss hacks on how to keep your tree alive as long as possible. Kotb — who usually waits until 10 days before the holiday to get her tree — says boiling the water and putting sugar in it is supposed to help. She then credits TikTok for the Christmas tree tips.

In addition to making the shared spaces in her home merry and bright, Bush Hager revealed that the decorations spilled over into her kids’ rooms too.

“My kids are so excited,” she shares, “and they kind of decorated their rooms too. We got some tinsel to put around their mirrors.”
