Jenna Bush Hager realizes her attempt to use a fake ID in college was 'dumb'

On Today, Savannah Guthrie, Craig Melvin, Dylan Dreyer, and Jenna Bush Hager were answering some fun questions about their pasts. Because Bush Hager is the daughter of the 43rd president of the United States, her younger years are not exactly mysterious to us.

“Everybody knows I had a fake ID, which was really naive because my dad was president,” Bush Hager said, drawing laughter. “I tried. I tried and failed. A girl that was in my school was like, ‘We look a lot alike; I’ll give you my ID.’ That was dumb.”

In May 2001, a 19-year-old Jenna Bush got in trouble when she tried to buy a margarita from a Tex-Mex restaurant in Austin. She was later charged with attempting to buy alcohol with false identification. Her twin, Barbara, also got busted that night, and was charged with being a minor in possession of alcohol. It was part of a rough stretch for Jenna — just a month earlier, she had been charged with being a minor in possession of alcohol.

It was a minor scandal at the time, but it’s now something that’s just laughed at. Even President George W. Bush had a chuckle about it in February.
