Jeff Garlin's character on 'The Goldbergs' gets killed off after controversial exit from the show
It was an emotional 10th season premiere of The Goldbergs, Wednesday, as Jeff Garlin’s character Murray Goldberg was killed off. The character’s off-screen death came as a shock to many viewers, but it was a result of Garlin exiting the show after an investigation found he “engaged in a pattern of verbal and physical conduct on set that made people uncomfortable.”
Despite the negative context surrounding Garlin’s departure, the writers and cast honored the passing of the character. The show opened with a scene showing Murray’s empty chair as the stage lights dimmed and a spotlight was shined on the character’s former seat.
“Just a few months ago, out of nowhere, we lost my dad,” said Adam Goldberg, who is also the show’s narrator. “We will always love you, Dad. Always. And we'll find a way to continue on together, because after all, we're the Goldbergs.”
Viewers appeared to appreciate how the character’s death was treated. As for Garlin, the day before the premiere he revealed for the first time that he is living with bipolar disorder.
While the show must go on for the remaining cast and crew, Murray Goldberg’s spirit will live on in the other characters.
