Jeff Bridges Wasn't Thrilled With 'The Giver' Either

While it’s always a devious treat to hear actors bad-mouth the movies they’ve starred in, it’s tough watching Jeff Bridges come to terms with the failure of The Giver. One of Hollywood’s most lovable Dudes spent 20 years developing Lois Lowry’s YA novel about a dystopian future. This was a passion project, not a paycheck.

Bridges, now on the promotional circuit for his new action movie The Seventh Son (out Friday) talked all about his disappointment with the late-summer release in an interview with Ricky Camilleri on HuffPost live, telling the host, he has “plenty” of regrets about The Giver.

The Big Lebowski star admitted that he had to cede control in order to get the film produced by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. “I knew getting Harvey involved, I was going to have to let go of my vision,” said Bridges. For instance, he wasn’t keen on the idea of casting a twentysomething actor like Brenton Thwaites as The Giver’s main character, who is 12 in the book. “I loved Brenton, he was wonderful in the show, but already that was going against my notions.”

While the film may not have turned out quite how Bridges would’ve liked, he still took a Zen attitude toward the experience: “I just decided to do it as a spiritual exercise in letting go.” Giver fans may have wish he held on.
