Jeezy filed for divorce from Mai Jenkins on Sept. 14, 2023, in Atlanta after two-and-a-half years of marriage, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE. The documents stated that their union was "irretrievably broken" with "no hope for reconciliation."

The documents added that the Grammy-nominated star said the former couple — who had a prenuptial agreement in place — are "currently living in a bona fide state of separation."

A little over a week before the filing, Mai Jenkins showered Jeezy with praise on social media for becoming a New York Times Best-Selling author for his book, Adversity for Sale.

“Today I celebrate a remarkable milestone achieved by my husband, @jeezy, whose memoir ‘Adversity For Sale’ has soared to the New York Times bestsellers list," she wrote in its caption.

“This moment isn’t just a testament to your literary skills baby, but a recognition of your ability to inspire through the power of storytelling," continued Mai Jenkins. "I’m endlessly grateful for your voice in this world. Honored to walk beside you my love🖤.”

The day before Jeezy filed for divorce he shared an Instagram upload of his own.

"Too focused on who I'm becoming to focus on who's not coming with me," he captioned a social media post just before news of their breakup went public.

However, the former co-host of The Real still seems prepared to fight for her marriage.

On Wednesday, a source told PEOPLE Mai Jenkins was “hurt and devastated” by his choice to file.

“She got married to stay married,” the insider said. “She's committed to trying to save her marriage.”

The source claimed that although the pair “had issues for a long time,” the last few months have been when things came to a head.

“He spends nearly all his time in Atlanta, and she was flying back and forth between there and LA,” the insider explained. “She was scaling back a bit and trying to spend more time in Atlanta to work on their issues.”

The source added: “She obviously knew they had problems, but she wasn’t expecting a divorce. Now she’s trying to figure out what her future looks like and where she’ll be living.”

The former couple shares one child, daughter Monaco, whom they welcomed in January 2022. Jeezy also has two children from previous relationships.

Court documents added that Jeezy wants to share joint legal custody with Mai Jenkins.

During an emotional conversation with her Real co-hosts in 2019, Mai Jenkins, 44, shared what stood out about Jeezy and how their bond was different from anything she had experienced in the past.

"I didn't even know until my new relationship that something as basic, even something as basic as like at his birthday party, he left his birthday to drive me to the airport. He was looking at me like, 'Are you crazy? I need to see you off. I'm going to drive you to the airport.' So I'm just saying ... just be mindful of your standards," she gushed.

Mai Jenkins was previously married to Freddy Harteis but they divorced in 2017 after 10 years together.
