Jeannie Mai is leaving Dancing With the Stars.

The co-host of The Real announced Monday on Good Morning America that she was diagnosed with epiglottitis, an inflammatory condition of the throat that can cause swelling to the lungs. She has been hospitalized.

“My doctors discovered a health concern with my throat which requires immediate attention and surgery,” Mai said in a statement. “I am heartbroken that my DWTS journey has to end here. I have pushed myself to new limits, physically and mentally, and I am so proud of how far we’ve come.”

DWTS said in a tweet that it wishes Mai a "full and speedy recovery." "Jeannie has inspired us, along with millions of fans, with her energy and dedication," the show said.

Partnered with Brandon Armstrong, Mai was a fierce competitor and appeared to be a strong contender for the finals until she ended up in the bottom two during last week's Halloween edition of DWTS. She was saved after performing a paso doble that earned a 25 out of 30. “Jeannie, you absolutely ate up that paso!” said judge Derek Hough. “That was a great, great paso.”

“You made a meal out of that!” growled judge Bruno Tonioli in response. (Cheer coach Monica Aldama was sent home instead.)

Monday's installment of DWTS was set to include a double elimination, but in the wake of Mai's exit the episode will feature a single elimination from the eight remaining couples.
