Jeannie Mai Jenkins and Jeezy welcomed daughter Monaco in January 2022.

At the time of her birth, Mai Jenkins announced the exciting news on Instagram. She shared a sweet snap of a baby blanket covered in footprints with the nametag "Baby Jenkins" nearby, captioning the photo, "I asked God for a life of love and happiness. He sent me my family."

In June, the businesswoman and television personality opened up to PEOPLE about the role her family plays in her daughter’s life. “When I do have to work, my mom and my brother are so major,” Mai Jenkins said.

“It really does take a village, and not just to help you but also to help your child just identify themselves with their family and who plays what roles,” Mai Jenkins continued. “That's big for me as a Vietnamese American — family is everything.”

On Sept. 14, the rapper filed for divorce from The Real host, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE. The couple were married for two-and-a-half years and had a prenuptial agreement in place.

Jeezy's filing says the former couple are "currently living in a bona fide state of separation," and that their marriage is "irretrievably broken" with "no hope for reconciliation." The document also says the rapper — who was already a father two children from previous relationships — wants to share joint legal custody of Monaco.

Mai Jenkins has been transparent about her journey to motherhood prior to Monaco's birth on Jan. 11, 2022. She and Jeezy announced they were expecting after experiencing a chemical pregnancy early in 2021.

In a video on her Hello Hunnay with Jeannie Mai YouTube channel, Mai Jenkins recalled starting in vitro fertilization (IVF) shots on her wedding day back in March. "The very day of our wedding, March 27, we started our in vitro shots. Went for about two weeks, doing the shots with Jeezy and preparing for it," she said.

Mai Jenkins went on to explain the couple then went in for a "routine appointment" and was soon informed after getting off a plane later that they got pregnant naturally. "I get off the plane, I call the doctor, and the doctor is like, 'Stop taking your shots. You're pregnant. You guys got pregnant on your own,'" she recalled.

"We got pregnant a week after the wedding," Mai Jenkins added.

Since Monaco's arrival, Mai Jenkins has opened up about the challenges that come with being a new mom — from a difficult breastfeeding experience to the fourth trimester and a bout with postpartum anxiety. However, she's remained positive throughout her trials.

"That little person has completely awakened me to seeing the world a whole different way," Mai Jenkins said on the PEOPLE Every Day podcast about one year after Monaco's birth. "And the crazy thing is, my daughter gives me so much confidence."

"I like myself more as a mom," she continued. "I like myself more getting up and taking care of somebody else and tending to her and watching her actually register things that we've worked so hard to teach her."

She added, "That's such an accomplishment. I didn't realize that."

Mai Jenkins finds it important to educate her daughter about where she comes from, even at a young age. When Monaco was 16 months old, The Real host told Jennifer Hudson on the Jennifer Hudson Show that her little one is "so opinionated."

"And I think the best thing is learning how to really teach her how to own who she is," Mai Jenkins continued. "She's a beautiful blend of being Black and Vietnamese and I want her to really understand what that means as a powerful woman today."

"We try to have her spend time with her Southern grandparents in Atlanta, in Georgia, and then she goes down to the Bay and she spends time with my Vietnamese grandparents all the time. So she understands both sides and I only speak Vietnamese to her. And then dad only speaks the South to her," she joked.

Not long after giving birth to Monaco did Mai Jenkins return to work — in fact, she's brought her little one with her too! The Real co-host shared with PEOPLE the significance of going back to work with her then 10-month-old daughter watching close by.

"I actually shot my first ever cooking show, called America's Test Kitchen: The Next Generation, with Monaco by my side. So I flew her to Boston, she stayed with Mommy for three and a half months and we shot the show," she shared.

"She was there with me in the green room, in my dressing room, watching me work. And I actually got really emotional, because I watched my mom work, I watched her work at IBM, I watched her go for job interviews," said Mai Jenkins.

"We waited in lunch cafeterias for her to pick me up to go to school and tutoring," Mai Jenkins continued. "So I'm giving Monaco that exact firsthand grip on what it looks like to have a working mom, and I'm so proud of it."

While the proud mom is sure to post photos of her daughter on her Instagram, Monaco has an account of her own — and it's verified (@monacomaijenkins)! Though, the page — which has nearly 300K followers — is likely managed by her parents, who she "shouts out" in her bio.
