Jazz Jennings is opening up about how she handles the hate directed at her as a transgender woman.

In PEOPLE's exclusive First Look at the upcoming season of TLC's I Am Jazz, the 22-year-old Harvard student faces a death threat while attending school in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

"I get death threats almost on a daily basis," Jennings tells PEOPLE ahead of the Jan. 24 premiere. "People will comment on my photos saying, 'Burn in hell. Kill yourself. You're in abomination.'"

She continues, "But when someone sends a threat to where you live and they know your location, it's a really, really scary feeling knowing that someone is kind of stalking you a little bit and they have these ill intentions."

Grappling with the death threat, an emotional Jazz tells her mom Jeanette in the preview, "It just doesn't stop."

"It's OK," Jeanette reassures. "Give me a hug."

For Jeanette, a death threat while Jazz is away at school is a nightmare scenario.

"This is exactly what we've been afraid of," Jeanette says in the preview. "This is different. There's a person out there that knows where she lives. I'm absolutely terrified because there's no timeline on a death threat."

And, while Jazz tells PEOPLE she feels safe at Harvard, the reality of the situation still upsets her.

"I do feel protected at school. I think they have my back and they're going to handle any situation," she says. "But it is really, really scary. And it's sad that we live in a world where people want to kill others just for being who they are."

In the season preview, the threat to Jazz's life seems to escalate as Jazz leads a group of fellow transgender activists across campus, chanting, "We've got the power!" while she wears a rainbow heart sweater and the transgender flag as a cape.

"I just need to get over there," explains a worried Jeanette on campus, pointing toward Jazz's march after shots of security are shown in the video.

The upcoming season of I Am Jazz will also follow Jennings in her native Florida as she embraces some firsts (a bikini wax, for starters) as well as various dates as she pushes herself beyond her comfort zone.

"I'm about to go on my first date in four years," Jazz reveals in the preview.

And, as her social activities grow, so does her anxiety, which Jazz says sometimes just "takes over."

Still, the college sophomore spends a lot of quality time with her family — which she tells people she "cherishes" — as her grandparents can even be seen participating in what appears to be a session of goat yoga!
