Jazz music will take over Alliance High School’s auditorium at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Alliance City Schools’ second Jazz Festival will feature performances from students at Alliance Middle School, the high school, and students who attend other Stark County schools.

Free and open to the public, the event will include the Alliance Middle School Jazz Band; Matt Stemple and the Canton South Jazz Band; Dave Dickerhoof and the Carrollton High School Jazz Ensemble; Craig Carnes and the Sandy Valley Jazz Band; and Alliance High School Jazz Orchestra with special guest Bobby Selvaggio and the Kent State University Big Band.

Each school will perform a few songs in the jazz genre leading up to KSU Big Band performance.

“I am super excited to be hosting the second annual Alliance High School Jazz Festival,” said Billy Sheak, an Alliance City Schools band teacher. “This is a great night for our hard-working students to share the stage with some local musicians as well as some college level musicians. This year, I am fortunate to have my middle school jazz band, along with my high school jazz orchestra performing.”

The AHS Jazz Orchestra started in September 2022 and has been growing ever since. The orchestra includes more than 20 students who perform under Sheak’s leadership. The students’ interest in jazz has grown over the past few years, prompting the addition of the Jazz Band at AMS.

“Come on out and hear some great blues, funk, fusion, bop, swing, latin and much more,” Sheak encourages.
