Jay Lethal Comments On ‘Black Machismo’ Trademark, If We’ll See The Gimmick In AEW

For as long as Jay Lethal continues to wrestle, he’ll never be able to escape the madness of Black Machismo.

All Elite Wrestling‘s Jay Lethal and Jeff Jarrett recently sat down with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard ahead of AEW Double Or Nothing. Recent trademark filings revealed Lethal had applied to trademark “Black Machismo”.

When asked about the possibility of seeing Black Machismo appear on AEW programming, Lethal wouldn’t confirm the reason for the trademark and reflected on the character’s origins.

“Yeah, I don’t know if I really want to comment on that right now, yeah. Feeling a little tiki gonzo about that right now, yeah,” Jay Lethal said. “You know, touching on that whole Black Machismo thing, it’s so wild that Jeff is my tag partner now, used to be my boss, but I remember Jeff pulling me into one of these production trucks when he decided, ‘Okay, he’s gonna be the Black Machismo character,’ and he’s like, ‘We want to make your entrance music, and we need a clip of you doing the Macho Man, just give me an Ohhh Yeah.’

“He pulled me into the truck, put a headset on me, and he’s pointing and points down, ‘Go ahead, do it, do it,’ and I think I did the ‘Ohhh yeah,’ maybe four or five times and each time, I wish I could’ve recorded Jeff’s face every time I did. He was just in love with it. I had done the impression before, but I had never listened to myself doing it. He played it back for me, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that was amazing. It sounds just like the Macho Man.’ But yeah, maybe down the line, there will be an extended Black Machismo something at AEW.”

Jeff Jarrett chimed in that he believes Black Machismo is part of Lethal’s personality and would like to see more of the character in All Elite Wrestling at some point as well.

“I’ve always said that there are impersonations, and look, we’re in Vegas; there’s lots of impersonators out here. Black Machismo really is an extension of Jay’s personality,” Jeff Jarrett said. “It is an extension of the sports entertainer, professional wrestler Jay Lethal.

“Jay and Lanny, Randy’s brother, they had a friendship, so I just think it’s cool when you drill down into the DNA of Jay Lethal and Black Machismo, the respect that he has for Randy, but on the backside, he makes it so much his own that it is the magic of it. So I’ll say this first and foremost, I want to see more Black Machismo.”
