Jason Mraz stole the show throughout “Monster Night” on “Dancing with the Stars,” and I’m only partly talking about his fancy footwork. For that, check out his zombie/mummy contemporary routine with pro partner Daniella Karagach to The Cranberries‘ “Zombie” above. After that performance, though, he stayed in character. For the whole episode. It was truly a meme-worthy commitment to the bit.
His dance was one of my most anticipated of the night since his partner Karagach earned an Emmy nomination for a previous Halloween-themed contemporary she choreographed for basketball player Iman Shumpert. This routine didn’t have quite the same impact. It didn’t help that Mraz had to dance first — the judges rarely give out their best scores at the top of the night. And it was his first time doing lifts, so he wasn’t necessarily as at-ease as he has been in weeks past. That’s not to say his dance was disappointing, however. He and Karagach scored stellar nines across the board and ended up third on the judges’ leaderboard. Alas, that does mean Mraz is still chasing his first 10s.

As the night progressed, though, Mraz kept making appearances. When subsequent celebs were interviewed by co-host Julianne Hough, the singer-songwriter could be seen in the background, still embodying the zombie, looking directly into the camera with a menacing glare. It was lowkey the highlight of the night and a testament to how much fun he was having with the Halloween theme and all that caked-on makeup. He never let his costume go to waste, and unsurprisingly, when viewer votes were added to the judges’ scores, he advanced safely to next week’s show. Who will he be playing next?
