Will Grammy-winner Jason Mraz win the Len Goodman Mirror Ball Trophy this season on “Dancing with the Stars”? He’s one of five finalists headed into the December 5 season finale, and he’s the latest in a long line of successful recording artists who have appeared on the show.

It’s hard to know how musicians will do on “DWTS.” Given their professional experience, they usually have a natural sense of rhythm and musicality, but they don’t always have prior dance experience, and they don’t always make it far in the competition. Sometimes they fall short like Spice Girls member Melanie C, “American Idol” champ Jordin Sparks and R&B star Tinashe, often because viewer voters let them down.

But multiple music stars have won the Mirror Ball Trophy in seasons past: 98 Degrees member Drew Lachey, Pussycat Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger, “American Idol” contestant Kellie Pickler, “Glee” star Amber Riley and Broadway actor Jordan Fisher. Many others have made the finals, including NSYNC‘s Joey Fatone, opera singer Katherine Jenkins, and Fifth Harmony members Normani Kordei and Ally Brooke, to name just a few. So it wasn’t too big a surprise when Mraz, despite initial self-consciousness about dancing, proved to be adept right from week one.

It wasn’t smooth sailing for Mraz all season, though. In his first ballroom dance of the season, he looked a little ill-at-ease in hold with his professional partner Daniella Karagach. And he made multiple mistakes on “Whitney Houston Night,” forgetting the choreography of his samba. He has been second from the bottom of the leaderboard a couple of times, but fans have kept him in the competition, and he recovered from that shaky samba by delivering perfect dances for two weeks in a row: an Argentine tango during “A Celebration of Taylor Swift” and a paso doble in the “Semi-Finals.”

It doesn’t hurt that he’s got Karagach by his side. This is only her fourth season competing on the show as a pro partner, but it’s already her third time in the finals. She finished third with rapper Nelly — another recording artist — and she won the grand prize with basketball player Iman Shumpert. For her work during Shumpert’s season, she also earned an Emmy nomination for her choreography. So if nothing else, we might be in for a killer freestyle on finale night.
