Jason Momoa is showing his true colors on his new show — and that's usually baby pink.

In his upcoming MAX series 'On the Roam' (premiering Jan. 18), the Aquaman star travels the country meeting the creatives he most admires where they work and delving into their worlds.

"It’s me on the road and all the things that I love to do. And all the things I’ve never done in my life that I've wanted to do," he tells PEOPLE.

The lifelong motorcycle enthusiast travels to North Carolina, for example, to rebuild historic bikes with the foremost experts in the world — and race them on a death-defying dirt track with a gang of his own making, dubbed "the Roamers." He comes away with a custom built pastel pink bike based on an antique model. (He also famously owns a pink Cadillac.)

While some might keep such a collector's item behind glass, Momoa says, "I rode it yesterday. I’m gonna be riding it tomorrow out with my friends. It looks good, doesn't it?"

In another episode, after meeting up with legendary guitarist Slash, he visits the headquarters of Gibson guitars in Tennessee to recreate some incredibly rare instruments. Full disclosure: most of his passions revolve around music and motors.

The moody, cinematic episodes don't follow a set formula, instead meandering in a way that mirrors Momoa's travel style. "Each episode just evolves into it’s own thing. Some of them turn into therapy sessions," he shares. "That’s the beauty of it. It’s very intimate and obviously, for me, it’s very revealing."

Asked what surprised him most about how the series turned out, he admits, "How much heart’s in it. I watched it with my children." (He shares daughter Lola, 16, and son son Nakoa-Wolf, 15, with ex Lisa Bonet.) "There’s just a lot of moments of heart that you didn’t see at the very beginning. I knew if I was gonna do it, it was gonna be serious, but it’s gonna have the fun and the action and it’s gonna have the giggles. So I’m really happy that there’s moments of tenderness, which is who I am," he adds.

Throughout the journey, the Game of Thrones alum has no qualms about expressing his enthusiasm and rambunctiousness. "You’re either gonna be annoyed by me or you’re gonna love it," he jokes.

While Momoa is traveling to unexpected places to pursue his adventures, the series is far more about the personalities he encounters than the locations they happen to occupy.

The star, who also executive produced and directed on the show, clearly doesn't believe in the adage "don't meet your heroes." As he goes "hunting" for fog covered suburban landscapes in the Bay Area with his favorite photographer Todd Hido or rips across fields on vintage motorbikes with American Pickers' Mike Wolfe, it feels more like Momoa is manifesting new best friends.

"Everyone on the show was wonderful and I’m still friends with them and we talk," he says.

His desire for the series is that it will instill the same curiosity he carries in viewers. "I hope that [it] inspires you to maybe open up some of those things that you put away in your own life . . . And then at the same time, hopefully you can just laugh at me being a goofball and actually who I really am."

On the Roam will be available to stream Jan. 18 on MAX.
