Jared Leto reunites with Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky for film Adrift

Twenty-one years after working together on Requiem for a Dream, actor Jared Leto and director Darren Aronofsky are reuniting for a new movie, one based on a short story by The Ring author Koji Suzuki, EW has learned.

The film Adrift takes its name from the tale told in Suzuki's collection of short stories, Dark Water, published in 1996. The short is a haunting story about a crew on a fishing trawler, who come across a haunted boat.

The official logline reads, "In the dead calm of the open sea, a fishing boat discovers an abandoned yacht with a strange distress call. A deckhand agrees to take lone control of it while it's towed into port, but he soon discovers why the rest of his more experienced crew members call it a 'Ghost Ship.'"

Leto and Emma Ludbrook, who produced many of the actor's films through Leto's Paradox production company, including the upcoming Morbius, had been chasing the rights to Adrift for a decade. In addition to directing, Aronofsky will also co-write the script with Luke Dawson (The Lazarus Project). Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions are also on board as producers alongside Leto, Ludbrook, and Carla Hacken.

Leto starred in Requiem for a Dream as Harry, who, along with other addicts, is trapped in a delusional world by his addiction as he deteriorates. This past October marked the film's 20th anniversary since opening in theaters.

The actor now appears opposite Denzel Washington and Rami Malek in this weekend's The Little Things, which is hitting theaters and HBO Max simultaneously. His comic book vampire film Morbius was supposed to come out this year but was recently bumped to Jan. 21, 2022.

Aronofsky signed on to direct Brendan Frasier in The Whale in which the actor plays a man suffering from a compulsive eating disorder.
