Japan Box Office: ‘Mixed Doubles’ Opens at Number One

Sales company, Pony Canyon is celebrating since one of its new titles at the TIFFCOM market, the. Starring Yui Aragaki as a former table tennis prodigy who is inspired by the success of an ex-boyfriend to take up the game again, the film bowed on 226 screens with Toho distributing.

For the Oct. 21-22 frame it made $2.1 million on 180,00 admissions, despite a raging typhoon that kept many fans at home. “Mixed Doubles” is forecast to finish near the $15 million mark.

Debuting in second place was “Psychic Kusuo,” Yuichi Fukuda’s comedy about a high school boy endowed with super psychic powers – but strives strenuously not to use them. With Sony releasing on 275 screens, the film earned $1.7 million on 156,000 admissions and is also expected to approach the $15 million milestone.

Entering the chart at number three was “American Made (known in Japan as “Barry Seal”). With Toho-Towa distributing on 291 screens, the Tom Cruise thriller recorded $1.55 million on 134,000 admissions. It looks likely to end its first run at around $10 million.
