Japan Box Office: ‘Cinderella’ Wins Third Weekend

TOKYO — “Cinderella” topped the Japanese box office for the third straight weekend. Over the May 9-10 frame, the film boosted its cumulative total to $27.5 million on 2.67 million admissions.

Moving up from number four to two was the Nobuhiro Doi drama “Biri Gal.” It sees an academically underachieving teen (Kasumi Arimura) begin to dream of admission to an elite university thanks to the influence of a charismatic teacher. The film ended the weekend with a total of $9.7 million on 995,653 admissions.

Finally, a similar success story was that of Damien Chazelle’s “Whiplash,” which rose from number 15 to 11 on strong word of mouth, while expanding from 16 to 34 screens starting May 9.
