Japan Box Office: ‘Ajin: Demi Human’ Debuts on Top
“Ajin: Demi-Human,” Katsuyuki Motohiro’s fantasy about a race of immortals who are regarded as enemies of humanity, debuted atop the Japanese box office for the Sept. 30-Oct. 1 weekend. With Toho distributing on 341 screens, the film earned $2.41 million on 210,000 admissions.
Propelled by fans of the Gamon Sakurai comic that served as source material and Takeru Sato, who stars as an immortal reluctant to war against humans, the film is expected to finish near the 15 million mark.
Bowing at number two, with Toho-Towa releasing, was “A Dog’s Purpose.” The Lasse Hallstrom canine drama made $1.45 million and is forecast to finish its first run around $10 million.
The third and final new entry to the top ten was “Hidden Figures.” With Fox releasing on Sept. 29 on 63 screens nationwide, the film recorded $580,000 in three days.
