Indiana University's Bloomington campus — at the center of the total solar eclipse on April 8 — is bringing out the stars that Monday. Grammy Award-nominated singer, songwriter and actress Janelle Monae and actor William Shatner will be two of the performers during the Hoosier Cosmic Celebration. Here's what you need to know.

When is the Hoosier Cosmic Celebration at IU's Memorial Stadium?

Hoosier Cosmic Celebration will be 1-5 p.m. April 8 at Indiana University's Memorial Stadium. The Marching Hundred will open the show, followed by a performance by students in IU's Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance.

Then contemporary dancers Samiyah Lynnice and Corey Boatner, an IU alumnus, will perform “Minor Bodies,” a duet choreographed by Elizabeth Shea, professor and director of the Contemporary Dance Program.

First woman of color in space, NASA astronaut Mae Jemison, to speak

Next former NASA astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison, the first woman of color to travel to space, will speak. Jemison served six years as a NASA astronaut and went to space aboard the shuttle Endeavor in 1992.

William Shatner to deliver spoken word performance

Before the total eclipse of the sun begins at 3:04 p.m., Shatner, best known for his role as Captain Kirk in “Star Trek” and who also has traveled into space, will deliver a spoken-word performance that was a collaboration with IU Jacobs School of Music students and faculty.

Janelle Monae to perform after total eclipse

Immediately after the total eclipse (it lasts for 4 minutes, 3 seconds in Bloomington), Monae will take the stage, performing selections of her music that often explores themes of space and futurism.

People in Memorial Stadium will be able to get a close look at an actual Blue Origin space capsule, similar to the one Shatner flew on into space. The capsule will be reconstructed and people can tour it while it's at the south field goal line. Space simulations will be included.

Book signings from Jemison and other will be set up in and around the stadium.

When do tickets to the Hoosier Cosmic Celebration go on sale?

Tickets for the Hoosier Cosmic Celebration start at $15 for students and $19 for the general public. They will be available on Ticketmaster beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 9.

What else is happening at Indiana University on April 8?

People are invited to a celebration of the eclipse in Dunn Meadow from 2 to 6 p.m., where there will be student activities, food trucks and more.

Events centered on contemplation of the eclipse will take place in the Arboretum from noon to 4 p.m. Faculty and staff from various departments and centers will lead eclipse-related activities.

IU Cinema will host Shatner following his appearance at Memorial Stadium. The red-carpet screening of “William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill” at 8 p.m. is sold out.

Also at 8 p.m., IU Concert Orchestra will present “The Planets — An HD Odyssey” at IU Auditorium. The orchestra will perform “The Planets,” accompanied by the visually spectacular HD Odyssey Series, featuring more than 35 years of NASA images and video.
