Grace & Frankie might be coming to an end after seven seasons, but its two stars are already planning to reunite in a major new project. That’s right: Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are teaming up to play best friends yet again, this time on the big screen.

Late last month, the pair signed on to the movie Moving On, a dark comedy that sounds like it could be straight out of the Grace & Frankie universe, per The Hollywood Reporter. The movie follows two old friends who reconnect at a funeral, then decide to seek revenge against the widower who did them dirty decades ago. Malcolm McDowell and Richard Roundtree round out the cast.

A release date for Moving On has yet to be set, so we’ll have to get by on the final season of Fonda and Tomlin’s hit Netflix series for now. After filming was interrupted by the pandemic, Netflix dropped the first four episodes of Grace & Frankie’s seventh and final season in August; the rest of the season is expected to stream sometime in the first half of 2022.

Fonda and Tomlin don’t just make a great onscreen pair—the two have been real-life friends for over four decades. Fonda first met Tomlin when she stumbled across the latter’s one-woman Broadway show in the late 1970s, around the same time that 9 to 5 was going into production. “I just could not believe that so many people live inside of this amazing body,” Fonda recalled on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2019. “I said, ‘I don’t want to make a movie about secretaries if she’s not in it.’”

Originally slated to be a drama, 9 to 5 was rewritten as a comedy—and its success cemented the budding friendship between Tomlin and Fonda. (Dolly Parton, too, but that’s another story.) “We’ve been friends ever since,” Tomlin told The Washington Post in 2017. “We’re friends because I just love her. I know Jane has my back whenever she can.”

“We’re so grateful that our show has been able to deal with issues that have really connected to our grand generation. And their kids, and amazingly, their kids as well!” Fonda and Tomlin wrote when Grace & Frankie was renewed for its final season. “We’ll miss these two old gals, Grace and Frankie, as much as many of their fans will, but we’ll still be around. We’ve outlasted so many things—just hope we don’t outlast the planet.”

Even if dark comedy isn't your genre of choice, who can deny the dynamic duo? We know we'll watch just about anything with Fonda and Tomlin in tow. We look forward to queuing up the new film whenever it's released.
