Jamila Woods Joins Bruce Hornsby on New Song “Bright Star Cast”: Listen

Bruce Hornsby has shared a new song from his forthcoming record Non-Secure Connection. The track is titled “Bright Star Cast” and has vocals from Jamila Woods and guitar from Living Colour’s Vernon Reid. Hear the song below.

According to a press release, when writing “Bright Star Cast,” Bruce Hornsby was inspired by The New York Times Magazine’s 1619 Project, James Weldon Johnson’s poem “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” and the work of historian Taylor Branch. “This attempt marks the seventh song of my career that deals with the issue of race in America, a deep, seemingly intractable problem that never seems to be solved in any satisfactory way—until, hopefully, now,” Hornsby said in a statement.

Non-Secure Connection, Bruce Hornsby’s follow-up to last year’s Absolute Zero, is out August 14.

Jamila Woods released LEGACY! LEGACY! in May 2019. Read Pitchfork’s interview with Jamila Woods about the record.
