Months after scoring his first Emmy notice for playing a fictionalized version of himself on “Jury Duty,” James Marsden is seeking recognition from the Screen Actors Guild for the same meta performance. Since he is, of course, eligible as both a solo actor and cast member, his lifetime SAG Award nominations total could soon rise to seven, with this possibly being his third Best TV Comedy Ensemble outing. Based on the fact that his previous two bids came for his work on as many programs, he now has a strong shot at blazing a trail as the first man to earn SAG ensemble mentions for three different comedy series.

According to Gold Derby’s 2024 SAG Awards odds, the actors from “Jury Duty” are comfortably ranked fifth in the comedy ensemble race with the support of 60% of our prognosticating users. On the Amazon Freevee original, Marsden ostensibly acts as a Los Angeles juror as part of a social experiment involving subject Ronald Gladden, an average vicenarian who is unaware that every other participant in the seemingly real trial is a professional actor. When it comes to his prospects as an individual nominee, Marsden is running sixth in a race led by reigning champion Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”).

This comedy ensemble nomination would come exactly one decade after Marsden’s first for “30 Rock” and three years after his second for “Dead to Me.” In those respective cases, he and his costars were ultimately bested by the casts of “Modern Family” and “Schitt’s Creek.” Coincidentally, “Modern Family” actress Julie Bowen (who shared in four wins for the ABC series between 2011 and 2014) currently stands as the only performer who has ever received SAG ensemble nominations for three unique comedy series, having also been recognized once each as a “Boston Legal” (2006) and “Weeds” (2009) cast member.

As of now, Marsden is one of eight male actors with comedy ensemble mentions for two series. Kevin Sussman (“Ugly Betty”; “The Big Bang Theory”) set that precedent in 2014 and has since been joined on the roster by Tony Hale (“Arrested Development”; “Veep”), Jeffrey Tambor (“Arrested Development”; “Transparent”), John Slattery (“Desperate Housewives”; “Veep”), Henry Winkler (“Arrested Development”; “Barry”), Paul Reiser (“Mad About You”; “The Kominsky Method”), and Mark Indelicato (“Ugly Betty”; “Hacks”). Marsden has also accomplished the feat of crossing over by earning a drama ensemble bid (for “Westworld,” 2017), as have Slattery (“Mad Men”) and Reiser (“Stranger Things”).

Outside of the small screen categories, Marsden has twice competed for the film ensemble award with his costars from “Hairspray” (2008) and “The Butler” (2014). This makes him one of only seven people who have been nominated for all three SAG cast awards, along with Slattery, Christine Baranski, Bobby Cannavale, Steve Carell, John Lithgow, and James Spader. Of this group, he is the only one with multiple notices in two of the three categories. As he sets out to achieve a new record, he can definitely be expected to gain a boost from already belonging to several exclusive SAG Awards clubs, and he could in turn help push his cast mates closer to the winners’ circle.
