James Marsden is enjoying some precious time kicking back with his family.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 star, 50, caught up with PEOPLE at the 2024 Spirit Awards Nominees Brunch in Santa Monica on Saturday, where he described his favorite part of the recent holiday season: staying home.

"I've traveled so much and it's always great and I love what I do and get to move around quite a bit, but there's something about just feeling like you're home and doing those Christmas traditions that we do with my kids, to get all my kids together and everybody and just being home," he says.

"I know it sounds like the most obvious thing, but boy."

Marsden is a father of three children: Jack, Mary and William. He shares 22-year-old Jack and 18-year-old Mary with ex-wife Lisa Linde, while he shares William, 11, with ex-girlfriend Rose Costa.

As for if he and his kids have a favorite holiday tradition, Marsden reveals that there are several.

"We leave cookies out," he says, adding, "We [also] leave carrots out for the reindeer. Of course, my kids are getting a little old. But it's nice to see my oldest son who is turning 23 soon start to pick up those traditions and do it for my youngest son."

And it's not just treats for Santa on Christmas Eve, the actor and his family also enjoy some fun themselves.

"So yeah, we do a little hot chocolate sing-a-long and one present opening the night before," Marsden says.

The actor has a busy award season ahead after slowing down during the holidays. He's nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television at the Golden Globes on Sunday, while his show, Jury Duty, snagged a nod for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy.

Last month, Marsden reacted to the nominations on Instagram, writing that he was "still floating on air" after hearing the news.

"Incredible company. Very honored to be included. @jurydutycomedytvshow just keeps on kickin’," he wrote.

The actor also marked his 50th birthday in September. To celebrate he was joined by several pals at a star-studded party thrown by Casamigos, which featured a cheeky shirtless photo of him printed on his cake.

Among those who attended were Woody HarrelsonNatasha LyonneBen Barnes Aaron Paul, Tessa Thompson and even Marsden’s Jury Duty costar Ronald Gladden. After news of the Freevee show’s four Emmy nominations this past year, Marsden previously told PEOPLE that his first call was to Gladden.

“I just wanted that to be my first call and make sure he’s still enjoying all of this, and feeling like we’re all going through it together,” Marsden said of the only cast member who didn’t know the show was a mockumentary.
