Harden’s trade to the Clippers comes after a turbulent offseason within the 76ers organization, as the three-time scoring champ became disgruntled after opting into his $35.6 million player option for the 2023-24 season, requesting a trade and naming Los Angeles as his preferred destination.

The California native made headlines this past summer after infamously deeming 76ers general manager Daryl Morey a “liar” during an Adidas event in Asia. Many speculated that his comments came due to his belief that he would either receive a guaranteed long-term contract with the organization or to be dealt to another contending team in exchange for exercising his player option, which would be in violation of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement. At the time, he vowed to never play for Daryl Morey again or an organization employing the accomplished executive.

However, the combo guard’s performance was unsteady in the 2023 NBA Playoffs, as he scored over 40 points in two games during the 76ers’ matchup against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The then but put on a dismal showing in the decisive Game 7, which Philadelphia lost, ending their postseason and dashing the city’s hope of its first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2001.
