“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” director and new DC Films boss James Gunn has provided an update on the status of his fledgling cinematic universe in the wake of the writers’ strike and a summer of box office disappointments, including “The Flash” and “Blue Beetle.”

Asked by a fan on the social media app Threads when the DC Films “canon” would officially start, Gunn wrote, “Nothing is canon until ‘Creature Commandos’ next year – a sort of aperitif to the DCU – & then a deeper dive into the universe with ‘Superman: Legacy’ after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it’s okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.”

“Creature Commandos” is an animated series that will debut on Max in 2024. Actors who voice roles on the planned show include David Harbour, Sean Gunn, and Viola Davis, who reprises her DC Films character Amanda Waller in the new show. Waller was a key figure in some DC projects from the previous era of films, including “Suicide Squad” and “The Suicide Squad.” According to Gunn, Davis is one of three actors currently from the past cycle of films who will carry into the new universe. Also coming along for the ride are John Cena, who starts on the Max series “Peacemaker,” and Xolo Mariduena, who played the lead role in “Blue Beetle.”

“Some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until ‘CC’ and ‘Legacy,’” Gunn wrote.

“Superman: Legacy” is Gunn’s official reboot of the DC films universe. Before the writers’ and actors’ strikes shut down Hollywood for the summer, Gunn had cast David Corenswet as Superman and Emmy-winning “Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Gunn wrote and will direct the new film, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2025.

Before all that new stuff takes place, DC fans who loved the universe created by Zack Snyder will have one more chance to watch those characters mixing it up. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” with Jason Momoa is out in December.
