James Corden rebukes Bill Maher's fat-shaming: Fat people are not 'stupid or lazy'

James Corden has a pointed message for Bill Maher, telling his fellow talk-show host that his comments about fat-shaming "needing to make a comeback" are unacceptable.

On his Sept. 6 episode of "Real Time," Maher originally made the controversial point that “fat isn’t a birth defect," telling his audience, "Nobody comes out of the womb needing to buy two seats on the airplane. Fat-shaming doesn’t need to end. It needs to make a comeback.”

On Corden's "The Late Late Show" Thursday, the host described to the audience how he first encountered the segment, thinking, "I'm watching this and all of I could think of was, 'Oh man, somebody needs to say something about this. If only there was someone with a platform who knew what it was actually like to be overweight.' And then I realized, oh, that will be me."

The 41-year-old host went on to say that, despite Maher's words, "fat shaming never went anywhere."

"There is a common and Insulting misconception that fat people are stupid and lazy and we're not," he said. "Like we get it. We know. We know that being overweight isn't good for us. And I've struggled my entire life trying to manage my weight. And I suck at it."

"We're not all as lucky as Bill Maher, you know," he added. "We don't all have a sense of superiority that burns 35,000 calories a day, right?"

Corden ended his segment with a plea for Maher to, "while you are encouraging people to think about what goes into their mouths, just think a little harder about what comes out of yours."

More: Fox News' Sean Hannity slams Bill Maher for remarks about David Koch

Maher was also slammed by Sean Hannity last month after the late night host said he was "glad" billionaire businessman David Koch had died.

"You're a (expletive). You're a mean-spirited (expletive)," Hannity said in a clip from his show, directly addressing Maher. "I have other words I really want to use, but unlike you, I work at a network that has some standards and if I said it, I'd have to spend all day tomorrow and the next day dealing with that crap."

Hannity continued: "The guy you're talking about and his wife donated $1.3 billion to charity. Until you do that, just keep your big mouth shut."

The late night host rejoiced Koch's death, saying "(Expletive) him... I'm glad he's dead."

Maher also added: "He was 79, but his family says they wish it could be longer but at least he lived long enough to see the Amazon catch fire. Condolences poured in from all the politicians he owned, and mourners are being asked in lieu of flowers, to just leave their car engine running."
