James Corden on Harvey Weinstein amfAR Jokes: ‘I Am Truly Sorry for Anyone Offended”

James Corden has addressed concerns over the jokes he presented as emcee at amfAR’s annual benefit gala on Friday, apologizing for any offense he may have caused.

The “Late Late Show” host wrote on Twitter, “To be clear, sexual assault is no laughing matter. I was not trying to make light of Harvey’s inexcusable behavior, but to shame him, the abuser, not his victims. I am truly sorry for anyone offended, that was never my intention.”

Rose McGowan and Asia Argento, two of the women Weinstein allegedly assaulted, had spoken out on Twitter against Corden’s jokes. “You m———— piglet,” McGowan wrote, followed by a series of tweets asserting that Corden is a friend of Weinstein’s and calling on CBS to make a donation to the East Los Angeles Women’s Center, or else they too “support rape culture.” She also called out Hollywood for laughing at Corden’s jokes, writing, “Hearing the audience’s vile roars and & laughs shows exactly what kind of Hollywood you really are.

Asia Argento referred to Corden as a “pig,” tweeting, “Shame on this pig and everyone who grunted with him,” alongside a video of Corden’s jokes.

“This is a beautiful room, it’s a beautiful night here in L.A,” Corden said in his opening remarks. “It’s so beautiful, Harvey Weinstein has already asked tonight up to his hotel to give him a massage.”

“It has been weird this week though, watching Harvey Weinstein in hot water. Ask any of the women who watched him take a bath,” he continued, along with: “Harvey Weinstein wanted to come tonight, but sadly he’ll settle for whatever potted plant is closest.”
