James Cameron is gearing up for the release of his third Avatar movie.

The filmmaker tells PEOPLE that "three is right on track" for its scheduled Dec. 19, 2025 release.

"We did the capture on three and the live-action photography on three as an intermingled production with [Avatar: The Way of Water], and we even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four," Cameron explains.

The Oscar-winning Titanic director notes of the fourth installment, which is scheduled for release in 2029: "We see them and then we go away for six years and we come back. And so the part where we come back is the part we haven't shot yet. So we'll start on that after three is released."

Speaking about the process of making the third Avatar movie, Cameron shares that "three is actually much more straightforward than two," in terms of production.

"Two, we got hit with the pandemic in the middle of it and we were interrupted, and then we had to reboot and reboot the production and all that sort of thing. And it was a scramble to get it done," he reflects on the process behind making Avatar: The Way of Water.

Cameron's Avatar sequel, 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water, grossed a colossal $2.3 billion worldwide but didn't unseat Avatar's throne, which stands as the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.9 billion.

As for what fans can expect from movie three, Cameron confirms that Kate Winslet will return to reprise her role as Ronal. He also adds that Winslet "went to school" learning from "a husband and wife shaman practice" to master techniques she will employ in the next Avatar.

"When you see her [Winslet] doing that purification ritual to try to revive Kitty in the film and some of the stuff that she's going to do in movie three, that's based on actual practice," the director explains.
