Jalen Hurts Pays for Funeral of 18-Year-Old High School Football Player Who Died in Shooting

The Houston native heard about Jarvon Coles' death, and wanted to help his former community

Jalen Hurts is showing his support in the wake of the death of a Houston high school football player.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Houston native, 25, has pledged to pay for the funeral expenses of Jarvon Coles, according to NFL.com reporter Ian Rapoport.

Coles, a standout student and captain of the football team at North Shore High School, was killed in a shooting at a house party in Humble, Texas on March 9.

According to Rapoport, the Eagles star heard about Coles’ death and wanted to help those in his former community.

Hurts played football at Channelview High School, where his dad Averion Hurts was the head coach. Situated on the city’s east side, Channelview and North Shore were rivals, located about five miles apart.

On March 9, deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were called to a rental home on Fieldwick Lane in Humble due to concerns about underage drinking, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said partygoers told them a young man was in the backyard having a seizure, the HCSO said, according to CBS affiliate KHOU-TV. While they performed CPR on the male, they realized that he had been shot in the chest, the station reported.

The young man, later identified by the HCSO as Coles, was rushed to a local hospital where he died shortly after, authorities said.

On Saturday, hundreds of people attended Coles’ funeral at The Light of the World Christian Fellowship Church in Humble, Fox affiliate KRIV-TV reported.

Hurts sent a video message to Coles’ family, and he wasn’t the only public figure to honor the beloved student.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston Mayor John Whitmire declared March 16 "Jarvon Coles Day."

“He was the type of person that everybody should strive to be like,” Domenique Mitchell, a family friend, told NBC affiliate KPRC-TV.
