Jake Gyllenhaal Shows Off His Vocal Chops with Hilarious Boyz II Men Parody During “SNL” Hosting Gig

The actor hosted the May 18 episode of 'Saturday Night Live' with musical guest Sabrina Carpenter

Jake Gyllenhaal can carry a tune!

The actor, 43, returned to host the Saturday Night Live season 49 finale on May 18 alongside Sabrina Carpenter, who served as the musical guest.

During his opening monologue, Gyllenhaal poked fun at hosting the season 49 finale, rather than the milestone season 50 premiere.

“When you think of historic television seasons, the first number that pops into your head is 49,” the Road House star said. “I mean, sure, you know, one more episode and I would have been hosting the premiere of the 50th season. But who cares?”

He then broke out in song to the tune of Boyz II Men’s “End Of The Road,” where he named all the celebrities who were asked to host the season finale before him. “They asked Pedro Pascal but he wasn’t around / Zendaya said no ’cause she’d be out of town / Even asked [Ryan] Gosling to come back again, just hosted three shows ago," he sang.

Gyllenhaal helmed the late-night sketch comedy show for the third time. He first hosted SNL in 2007 and then returned to host again in 2022.

At the time, he joked about how long it had been between his appearances in his opening monologue, stating, “The last time I hosted was the year 2007. You know how long ago that was? That was like 400 Marvel movies ago."

During his most recent hosting gig, Gyllenhaal took part in various sketches, including one in which he parodied Scooby Doo, and another that poked fun at fast fashion.

The Academy Award nominee recently starred in the Prime Video movie Roadhouse, a remake of the classic 1989 action film starring Patrick Swayze and Kelly Lynch.

A sequel for the remake was quickly greenlit after the movie amassed nearly 80 million viewers worldwide.

The streaming service shared the news on Instagram ahead of Gyllenhaal's hosting stint, writing, “With nearly 80 million viewers to date, Jake Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role as Elwood Dalton in a Road House sequel.”

Gyllenhaal also stars in and executive produced the Apple TV+ legal thriller Presumed Innocent, set to premiere on June 12.

Based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow, the eight-part limited series follows Gyllenhaal as chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich as he becomes embroiled in a woman’s murder during an investigation. Ruth Negga, Peter Sarsgaard and O-T Fagbenle also star.

Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. EST on NBC and will return in the fall.
